Home.

Well I'm home from my 4 days away with the family.  I was up in DC visiting my grandfather who's just been diagnosed with alzheimer's, and also visiting my brand new baby nephew Logan.  It was an exhausting and stressful trip.

Logan was born a month early, and his tiny little body is having trouble digesting food, he's jaundice (sp?), so he's not gaining any weight, actually he'd lost a pound by the time we saw him (a week after his birth), and a pound is a lot when you only weigh 6 lbs.  We got to see him at home, but as of Tuesday he was back in the hospital.  They had him in NICU for 3 days, and he's now doing a lot better, having now gained back 6 ounces.  His jaundice is going down, and things are looking good for him, but he'll be kept in the hospital for at least another week to make sure he keeps this up.  I'll post some pictures up soon, he's so tiny!  And besides all the stuff going on, he's perfect.  I've already claimed the 'favorite aunt' title hehe.

My Grandpa (Pappy) isn't doing so well though.  It's difficult to even recognize him now.  He can't hold a conversation, and often times starts talking about things that make no sense.  He's really going downhill fast, and it's been really hard on my Nana.  They live in a home, but she is still having to do a lot for him.  He's actually staying in the psych ward now, in a different building, and she's having to go over there and do his laundry and take care of him on a daily basis.  He's always been a very stubborn man, and now he's very confused and at times it makes him very upset and vicious with everyone.  He hates where he's having to stay now, and because of the constant confusion, he thinks he's being punished.  It was heartbreaking when we first got there, he was fighting with an orderly, and being very forceful and loud with her, and as soon as he saw us, he walked over to my sister and me, hugged us tightly and burst into tears. He just held us there for a good 2 minutes. I have never seen this man cry in my life.   This is just so hard, to see someone who's always been so headstrong, just fading away.

We did have some good times with him though.  I'll write more later, and put up some pictures.  I just got home, gotta work early and all day tomorrow, and im sooooo tired!

  2. My own Papa is fading with Parkinson's. Is there anything harder than watching such a strong man break down? :-(
